I felt compelled to reply because I actually have a piano in my studio and music is a big part of the lives of my family. I play to a basic level, but both of my grown up children are very accomplished and my son is now a Composer for Film and television. I have spent the past 7 years listening to them both playing piano as I paint and the two (piano music and art) are very much intertwiend. Thankyou for sharing your thoughts. Thank you Fiona and Gail for this post. It was inspiring to read! I love to read all these posts and I come away with technical ideas. However, Fiona, I really needed to hear what you said about the human connection to your subjects. An object becomes an integral part of your life. I have been thinking about that, and how it makes art important. I love that way you put it as bringing attention to what my be overlooked. It is working in your art and it is wonderful!

Thankyou for reading and for your comment. I have always believed in the cross-fertilisation of artistic disciplines (I could write another huge blog just about this topic!). I taught both Graphic Design in the Design department and Drawing in the Fine Art department of a college for many years. Creativity, drawing, mark making, communication, problem solving, expression – these are common things to all areas of art and design.
